POPUP SHOP SUCCESS
Amanda from Freewheeling Craft + Gareth from Makerhouse Co. are no strangers to popup shops and what it takes to make it work. These are their stories....
Amanda always likes to try something a little bit different. After being inspired by a story that she read from NYC a few years back she always knew that she wanted to try the concept out... she just didn't know how, and if Ottawa was the right place for it. But after seeing how the indie craft scene has shifted in the past year an opportunity presented itself and she jumped in head first. Freewheeling Craft was host to a holiday popup shop on Preston st, hosting 60 local brands for 4 weeks of shopping. The little shop doubled its revenue expectations. There were SO many learnings, and for the next one there will be some refinements to some of the operational components... this community is so open and supportive that everyone learnt together.
Gareth opened up Makerhouse Co. as a three month popup to "dip his toe in the water" so to speak- he took over a large dreary space in hintonburg and immediately warmed it up with the rich wood pieces, quirky art and fragrant candles. The community welcomed him with open arms and he quickly realized that the popup would turn to permanent. Before the three months was up, he had signed a lease and established himself as a permanent fixture in the neighbourhood and an influencing voice on the local shopping scene.
The popup shop component to CRAFTFEST 2017 is going to be a fusion of these two success stories to create a dynamic celebration of local craft for this unique moment in Canadian history.
